Sleep apnea is a disorder in which an individual’s breathing is obstructed while they sleep. While it is very common, it is still quite serious and needs to be addressed as quickly as possible. Sleep apnea affects your sleep patterns, of course, but it can also put you at risk for other serious health problems. These can include high blood pressure, stroke, or even heart failure.

Sleep apnea can be caused by genetic predispositions, or environmental factors. Even weather can play a role in obstructive sleep apnea, particularly if you are suffering from sinus congestion or allergies. Obstructive Sleep Apnea, or OSA, occurs when your airway is physically blocked, reducing airflow.

Genetic predispositions that may play a role in whether you have sleep apnea include:
–deviated septum
–oversized tongue
–oversized tonsils
–undersized jaw
–males are more at risk than females

You are also more at risk to have obstructive sleep apnea if you are more than 40 years old.

If you do have OSA, the sleep doctor will discuss treatment options with you. These options may include such things as oral appliance therapy, Continuous Positive Air Pressure (CPAP) therapy treatments, or surgery. Consulting with your doctor will help determine if you have sleep apnea, and potential treatments.
