If you have diabetes, then it’s important to keep your smile in tip-top shape. This is because you are at high risk of having tooth and gum problems. For those who have poorly controlled blood glucose levels as well as fragile and vulnerable teeth, gum disease and tooth decay is likely to develop. So, please do your best to keep your smile in tip-top shape. To help you do so, Dr. Nirmal Aujla is happy to share some tips.

Tip No. 1: Take good care of your teeth and gums by having a diligent oral hygiene routine. As you brush twice a day, use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. As you floss once a day, use floss that is easy to handle. If you can, swish your mouth once a day with antiseptic mouth rinse. These things can help you maintain a healthy smile and they can help you prevent a severe gum infection.

Tip No. 2: Visit Dr. Nirmal Aujla if your gums ever bleed while you eat or while you brush your teeth. It’s also important to monitor and tell your dentist about any abnormal changes in your mouth, like if you have suddenly developed white patches on the gums.

Tip No. 3: Visit your dentist every six months for a professional cleaning and checkup. While you are at our office, make sure to tell our dental team that you are diabetic. Your dentist can give you the instructions you need to properly care for your smile. During your six-month checkup, our team will thoroughly clean your teeth and give you any treatments that can help you have the healthy smile you deserve.
